OK, I'm feeling the generation gap... I've never blogged before, and I'm not sure how this differs from a discussion post, except that, theoretically, anybody can view this, not just classmates...? That makes me vaguely uneasy. Maybe fear of the unknown...
Anyway, you folks that are used to this genre: what's the practical purpose, for instructional or social purposes? Do any of you use this outside of a class assignment?

Hey Ellen,
I think that you are not the only one in this situation. Blogging, like other web applications is something that is so new, yet it seems like 'everyone has been doing it'.
You are not alone in your apprehension. At times I feel that I am always trying to catch up with the trend.
As far as using blogs for learning applications, its still very new, but in the ESL world blogs are being used to help with student writing in a meaningful real life practice.
If you are only writing for a teacher or a class, it is very different than writing for 'all the world to see'.
This will be my second attempt at blogging for class. I can see the value with having an open discussion on your thoughts. Presumably open to anyone in the world to join. Despite being tech savvy I have found myself backing away from the newer web tools, so as to have less time spent on the computer. Although many of these tools are meant to make your time online more efficient. Practicing selective attention is definitely part of my online life.
